Postsecondary student Vanessa shares a special moment with Bill and Susan Brock who generously made her scholarship possible.
Defining something doesn’t always capture its true meaning. Take the word scholarship, for example. According to Webster, a schol·ar·ship (n) is an amount of money that is given by a school, an organization, etc., to a student to help pay for the student’s education.
But a scholarship is so much more, and its meaning shifts depending on who you ask.
For an Immokalee Foundation student, it represents opportunity. For a family, it represents hope. For our economy, it represents growth. And for the generous donors who make it possible, it represents a powerful investment in the future.
To fully understand the meaning and impact of a scholarship, we have to look at it through each of these perspectives:
Students
For Immokalee Foundation students, a scholarship represents the chance to pursue a degree without the burden of overwhelming costs. Just as importantly, it’s an opportunity to honor the sacrifices their families have made, and the belief others have placed in their potential.
First-generation college student Vanessa embodies that impact. Now attending Florida Gulf Coast University and pursuing a degree in Finance, she is able to stay focused on her education thanks to scholarship support from Bill and Susan Brock, dedicated supporters of The Immokalee Foundation.
Vanessa’s long-term goal is to attend law school and become a financial lawyer—a path she knows is within reach because of the investment made in her future.
“My sponsor’s support provides not only financial assistance, but also belief in my goals,” she shares. “It shows me that my dreams and future are worth investing in.”
Her message to the Brocks is direct and heartfelt:
“Thank you for your kindness and belief in me; it means more than I can say. I will not take your trust lightly and will always strive to succeed to the best of my ability.”
Families
For the parents of an Immokalee Foundation student, seeing a son or daughter go to college, especially as the first in their family, represents a turning point when the future begins to look different.
It means the possibility of working in a career with stability and opportunity rather than laboring long hours in the hot sun for low wages. It means access to benefits, career growth, and financial security that may have never felt within reach before.
But beyond all that, it brings a deep sense of pride to watch their child achieve something they never had the opportunity to pursue.
And perhaps most powerfully, it creates a ripple effect, changing not just one life, but the trajectory of an entire family for generations.
Economy
Expanding access to postsecondary education doesn’t just help students; it grows the entire economy. It leads to higher earnings, a stronger workforce, and reduced public costs.
According to the Helios Education Foundation, increasing college enrollment by just 10% generates an $8.28 billion annual economic boost for Florida. In Collier County, the projected economic impact of increased college attainment is approximately $183 million annually, reinforcing the powerful return on investing in education at the local level.
As workforce needs projections continue to grow in our community, the need to develop and retain homegrown talent has never been greater. Investing in The Immokalee Foundation today is essential to building the skilled workforce that will sustain Collier County’s economy for years to come.
Donor
For those who sponsor a scholarship for an Immokalee Foundation student, it becomes far more than a financial contribution. It’s a deeply personal investment in a young person’s future. Donors have the unique opportunity to see their impact in real, human terms, watching lives change.
In the words of Immokalee Foundation supporters and scholarship sponsors, Bill and Susan Brock:
“We get the good feeling that a deserving child is going to achieve their dreams and fulfill the dreams of their hard-working family. Vanessa was everything we could have hoped for and truly embodied the qualities we wanted to support. She deserves to keep reaching for the stars.”
After witnessing the Foundation’s impact firsthand, supporting a scholarship became an easy decision for the Brock family.
“Every student deserves the opportunity to pursue a college degree with financial support when needed, Bill and Susan shared. “If you’re fortunate enough to do so, pay it forward through an educational scholarship. The Immokalee Foundation’s structure ensures that support is used in a powerful and effective way.”
